We're seeing the effects of the housing market meltdown gravely affecting our financial institutions across the country. The US government stepped in to save Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in early September. Without these secondary market institutions able to purchase mortgages made by various lending companies, virtually no one would be able to finance the purchase of a home.
